Canelo Alvarez is wasting no time in calling out Gennadiy Golovkin ahead of their trilogy bout Sept. 17 in Las Vegas.

Alvarez said Friday that his third matchup against Golovkin is “personal,” according to ESPN’s Marc Raimondi. He added that it would be “sweet” to send the 40-year-old into retirement.

“He always pretends to be a nice guy, like in front of people,” Alvarez said. “He’s an assh–e. That’s what he is. He’s an assh–e. It is what it is. I don’t pretend to be nice. This is the way I am. I don’t pretend to be another person. He’s always pretending in front of you and people, ‘Oh, I’m a nice guy.’ He’s not.”

Golovkin, on the other hand, told reporters that there was nothing personal about the bout. He said he thought any differences the two had were resolved when they hugged after their second fight.

However, Alvarez said Golovkin knows why he is upset.

“He always talk about I’m scared, I’m running away when I’m fighting the best guys out there and he’s fighting with Class D fighters,” Alvarez said. “He’s talking a lot of things about me. That’s why it’s personal for me.”

Alvarez, who is from Guadalajara, Mexico, has a record of 57-2-2. His last fight came against Dmitry Bivol in May, and he fell to the Russian via unanimous decision.

The 31-year-old first fought Golovkin in September 2017 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. They fought to a split draw, which resulted in a second bout being booked for September 2018.

Alvarez defeated Golovkin in their second meeting via majority decision. The fight was originally scheduled for May 2018, but Alvarez failed a drug test two months before the bout and was suspended six months after testing positive for clenbuterol.

Alvarez has only ever lost to Bivol and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Golovkin, meanwhile, is 42-1-1. His last fight came against Ryota Murata in April, and he won via technical knockout.

The Kazakh’s only loss, which he hopes to avenge in September, was against Alvarez.
